6 Truths About Tough Times

One second you’re standing in the shallows of the beach, enjoying the salty air and the warmth of the ocean, but before you know it your feet are wiped out under you and you’re sucked into the current. You’re so caught off guard,  and you struggle to get air, so you cry out but no one is there. You try harder but somehow you feel like you drown faster. It takes you over and it seems hopeless. What you never thought could happen, happened to you. Life happened.

No matter who you are, how old you are, how successful you may or may not be, or what phase of life you’re in, life isn’t afraid to knock you down. Not just knock you down a notch but it knocks you out, and real good. It gives you a good beating, and right when you try to get up, it hits you again. It stings. It hurts and doesn’t make sense. Life isn’t fair and it never will be unfortunately. It straight up sucks. The lack of fairness in life is something that everyone struggles to wrap their minds around at one point or another in their lives. You find yourself standing in the middle of thunder and lightning wondering when the pain will ever end.

The bad days or weeks doesn’t mean life can’t be amazing and everything you want it to be. We are often taken out of our comfort zone and put into new and terrifying circumstances. It could be an illness, failing a class, divorce,  or the ending of something you weren’t expecting. It makes us want to cry out that we weren’t ready for this. Honestly no one is. The unexpected change is a part of life, and not only brings the bad but often can bring the best things we get in life. A new friendship, an opportunity, a job, a relationship.

When life knocks us down it is easy to let it take us over completely. It takes control of every aspect of our lives and we whine and moan and say it isn’t fair. You’re right, it’s not. I’m even at fault for doing this, and soon I feel taken over with negativity. My thoughts and attitude changes drastically; it consumes me like night taking over day. It is really true when you hear that “attitude is everything”. Your attitude defines if your glass is half full or half empty. It decides what path you take when you recover from hurt, rejection, loss, or failure.  Life is 20% of what happens to you, and 80% of how you react to it. You can either try to find a silver lining, or you can let it eat you up and run your life.

Life is 20% of what happens to you, and 80% of how you react to it.

So you can either be bummed out for days, weeks, or years, or you can try to approach it in a new way and try again. Pick yourself up, and go on because life sure as hell isn’t stopping. It goes on whether we want it to or not. I know you’re thinking that I don’t know what you’re going through, that I don’t get it. You’re right. I have no clue what everyone else is going through, but no one else has a clue what I go through. We each have our own battles and scars that people will not understand or ever know about. It makes us unique and different. The tough times can shape us the most depending on how we deal with it. Tough times can make you stronger or better if you choose to let that happen.

It certainly isn’t easy. You don’t just wake up one day feeling inspired to be happy about your circumstances and declare that no matter what, you’re going to be okay. It doesn’t happen at the snap of your fingers. It’s really okay to not be okay sometimes. But it’s worth trying a little every day to change your mindset and attitude. Overtime it becomes easier, a little less painful. The burden lightens a little too. You’ll find yourself looking back at what you went through, and you’ll see how you’ve changed and how life has changed since then. Some of the most loving, sensitive people are the one’s who have felt defeat and despair, and have learned how to come back from it.

The key to getting around any challenge in life is to never give up. Don’t give up on your dreams or goals. Don’t quit. Don’t stop. Find another way around it. It may take longer or be a different path than anticipated or what you planned on but you can still get there. You may not take the same path but it certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be done or that you can’t be successful. When life gives you a roadblock, get around it, jump or climb over it, whatever you have to do. In the end it is so worth pushing through a little longer.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” –Friedrich Nietzsche

There are important things to remember when you are going through these hard times, but are so important to remind yourself of

  1. Attitude is everything.

Like I said, attitude is truly everything. If you try to look at your position from a different light it may not seem so bad, or you may find a positive aspect from it. If an opportunity was taken from you, maybe another one that is better suited for you is waiting and will be more successful for you. You truly never know. One door closes, and another one will open.

  2. You are still in control of certain areas of your life.

It is so easy to not want to do anything. To just sit alone with your thoughts and feel sad for yourself, however that is extremely unhealthy and can lead to depression. Take control and do what you can do. Don’t let fear stop you, because your greatest fears are most likely unrealistic and are only stopping you. Yes, it is going to be different but not everything is going to change. Acknowledge your fear, and face it courageously to fight back. Don’t let it stop you from moving forward with your life.

  3. Tough times are growing periods.

How do you know what a good day is if you never experience bad ones? You can’t be thankful for the good times when you don’t experience sad, dark times. It’s a part of life to have highs and lows, and then the somewhere in between. Sometimes we need to feel pain just like we need to feel love and hope. You don’t always understand love if you have never felt rejection. You learn how strong you are when being strong is the only option left.

  4. Change doesn’t happen overnight.

If you’ve ever heard that success doesn’t happen over night, well that is true. It takes time to create change or success, but each day is a crucial step for the end goal. Instant success doesn’t mean it is lasting success, and rarely is it what we really want. Good things come to those who wait, but you still have to work for it every single day. Patience doesn’t mean waiting, but being able to keep a good attitude while working hard.

  5. You don’t need to live up to others expectations.

Don’t have others validate your progress, because you can’t live up to the expectations of someone who has no idea what you’re going through. You don’t live in the world to try to impress people. Make you’re own unique path. Validate your own progress and success. Success is how YOU define it, not other people.

  6. You are not alone.

Yes it feels like you’re alone. It feels like no one will ever understand your pain or be able to help you. You’re right, they may not understand your pain, but everyone has their own. It is easy to look around and think everyone else has their life put together when you’re in the midst of something difficult. But they don’t have it all together, they have their own struggles too. If we talk and communicate with each other, we could see that we aren’t alone. Pain is a common connection between humans. You may even find someone who is going through something similar. People care about you and want to help. We are stronger together, not apart.

It’s a part of life to face challenges, and it isn’t always a horrible thing. It doesn’t seem like a good thing in the middle of a struggle, but I personally look back and can be grateful for what I learned or how I may have changed due to the hard time in my life. Learn to be tougher than your tough time. Don’t pray or wish for an easier life, but instead pray to be strong to endure all hardships life tosses your way. Get knocked down seven times, get up eight times and keep living.
